Chapter One: Introduction
1.1 Background of the Study
Gender-based violence (GBV) remains a significant issue across the world, with various forms including physical, sexual, psychological, and economic abuse. In Nigeria, particularly in areas like Bwari Local Government Area (LGA) in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), gender-based violence has been a pervasive concern, impacting the physical, emotional, and mental health of individuals, particularly women and girls. Digital media, with its ability to reach a wide audience in real time, has become an important tool in the fight against GBV. According to studies by Yusuf et al. (2023), digital media platforms such as social media, websites, and mobile applications have become effective platforms for raising awareness, providing information, and mobilizing support against gender-based violence. These platforms allow victims to seek help, report violence, and connect with advocacy groups and legal resources. This study investigates the role of digital media in combating GBV in Bwari LGA, examining its effectiveness in public awareness campaigns, support networks, and policy advocacy.
1.2 Statement of the Problem
Despite the increased awareness of gender-based violence, many cases go unreported or are handled inadequately due to social stigma, lack of support systems, and limited access to information. Digital media has the potential to address these gaps by providing a platform for victims to report abuses, engage in advocacy, and connect with support networks. However, there is limited research on how digital media specifically influences the reduction of GBV in Bwari LGA. This study seeks to explore the effectiveness of digital media in combating gender-based violence and the challenges faced in using these platforms to promote gender equality and support victims of abuse.
1.3 Objectives of the Study
1.4 Research Questions
1.5 Research Hypotheses
1.6 Significance of the Study
This study is important for understanding how digital media can be harnessed to combat gender-based violence, particularly in regions like Bwari LGA. The findings will be useful for NGOs, government agencies, and advocacy groups working to address GBV, as well as for designing more effective digital campaigns and support mechanisms for victims.
1.7 Scope and Limitations of the Study
The study will focus on Bwari Local Government Area in the Federal Capital Territory and will assess the role of digital media in combating gender-based violence within that region. It will not include other areas or broader national programs.
